Future — I NEVER LIKED YOU (2022)

A highly polished, comfortable victory lap that revels in the toxic tropes he invented

Released in April 2022, I NEVER LIKED YOU arrived at a point in Future’s career where he had absolutely nothing left to prove. As the undisputed architect of modern, melodic trap music, his legendary 2014–2015 run already cemented his legacy. By the 2020s, the internet had fully embraced him not just as a pioneer, but as the reigning meme-king of toxic masculinity. Instead of pushing back against this caricature, Future leaned into it entirely, delivering an album that trades the desperate, lean-soaked hunger of DS2 for the expensive, calculated apathy of a billionaire villain.

A Luxurious Trap Blueprint
Sonically, the album sounds incredibly expensive. Executive produced by Future alongside trusted collaborators like ATL Jacob and Southside, the beats are cinematic, spacious, and tailored perfectly to his signature warble. The opener, “712PM,” is a masterclass in tone-setting, featuring a relentless flow over menacing synths. Meanwhile, “PUFFIN ON ZOOTIEZ” provides the atmospheric, late-night cruising anthem that core fans crave, proving his ear for hypnotic melodies remains unmatched.

And then there is “WAIT FOR U” featuring Drake and Tems—an undeniable, Grammy-winning juggernaut. It perfectly executes the “vulnerable but toxic” R&B-rap crossover formula that Future has been tweaking since “LoveXXXellence,” anchoring the album with immense commercial gravity.

“It is the gold standard of contemporary trap, executed by the genre’s creator—yet it deliberately chooses the comfort of the throne over the thrill of the conquest.”

The Art of Coasting
However, the flaw of I NEVER LIKED YOU lies in its extreme comfort. Across its 16-track standard run, the album often blurs into a homogenous mood board of luxury brand name-drops, fleeting romances, and standard trap bravado. While the highs are stratospheric, the mid-section tracks feel like algorithmic muscle memory. Future is operating on autopilot, utilizing the exact flows and thematic crutches he perfected half a decade prior. He isn’t reinventing the wheel; he’s simply taking it for a spin in a custom Maybach.

Why It Received a “Slightly Late” Rating
I NEVER LIKED YOU is the quintessential “Slightly Late” album. It is incredibly solid, undeniably successful, and filled with strong ideas that thoroughly satisfied his massive fanbase. Yet, it is deeply familiar. It didn’t shift the culture, introduce a new sound, or move the hip-hop needle forward. Instead, it served as a highly enjoyable, polished reminder of the landscape Future built, arriving as a victory lap rather than a revolution.
