Masego — Lady Lady

A warm, sun-drenched fusion of jazz and trap that permanently established the saxophone as a premier modern R&B instrument.

In the late 2010s, alternative R&B was dominated by moody, nocturnal, and often melancholic soundscapes. Then came Micah Davis—better known as Masego—who decided to throw a velvet wrench into the machine. His debut studio album, Lady Lady, released in September 2018, remains a masterful, sun-drenched celebration of romance, womanhood, and his self-defined genre: “Traphouse Jazz”. Where others chose angst, Masego chose playfulness, silk, and a golden saxophone.

On Time

“Warm, lavish, and incredibly charismatic. ‘Lady Lady’ is a masterclass in organic fusion, proving that live instrumentation and modern trap drum patterns can dance together in perfect step. It has aged beautifully, sounding just as fresh and inviting today as it did when it dropped.”

The Sonic Architecture: The Birth of Traphouse Jazz
To understand Lady Lady, you have to understand Masego’s process. He is a premier multi-instrumentalist who approaches production like a live looper. The album’s production—handled by Masego himself alongside heavyweights like Sounwave, Louis Futon, and FKJ—strikes an immaculate balance. Crisp, skittering 808 hi-hats lay down the modern rhythm, while warm electric pianos, deep basslines, and improvisational saxophone runs supply the classic jazz soul.

Nowhere is this organic wizardry more apparent than on the album’s crown jewel, “Tadow.” Originally born from a viral, fully improvised, 8-minute YouTube jam session with French multi-instrumentalist FKJ, the studio cut is a masterclass in progressive layering. The song builds block by block—a guitar loop, a drum kick, a synth pad, and finally, that iconic, soaring saxophone line. It’s a hypnotic groove that captures lightning in a bottle.

The Lyrical Ledger: A Modern Directory of Romance
As the title implies, Lady Lady is a concept album dedicated to the diverse women who have crossed Masego’s path—his muses, his heartbreaks, his elders, and his dreams. Rather than falling into tired, heavy-handed tropes, Masego treats dating with a lighthearted, deeply human touch. On “Old Age” (featuring SiR), he delivers a breezy, hilarious ode to the peace of mind that comes with dating older, more mature women. Driven by a bouncing electric bass guitar, Masego’s playful lyrics contrast perfectly with SiR’s smooth-as-silk background harmonies.

The thematic richness continues on “Queen Tings” (featuring Tiffany Gouché), a lush, Afrobeat-infused anthem dedicated to Black excellence and beauty, anchored by Tiffany Gouché’s rich vocal layers. Meanwhile, “Shawty Fishin’ (Blame the Net)” is a witty, mid-tempo groove that gently pokes fun at social media dating culture, Instagram facades, and the comedy of internet thirst.

“Masego didn’t just release a great debut; he constructed a completely unique sonic lane—an organic fusion of live jazz instrumentation and trap bounce that he still owns to this day.”

Deep Dive: Collaborative Chemistry
What makes Lady Lady hold up over multiple listens is how seamlessly Masego integrates his collaborators into his world. The vocal chemistry feels completely natural, never forced by label executives chasing a streaming algorithm.

Final Word
If there’s any critique of Lady Lady, it’s that some of the shorter tracks (like “Silk” or “Sugar Walls,” which features uncredited vocals from Ari Lennox) act more as fleeting, unfinished sketches than fully realized songs. However, as a cohesive, front-to-back listening experience, the album is a triumph of style, mood, and exceptional musicality. It is an intimate yet highly danceable record that sounds like a sunset drive—a brilliant testament to an artist who refuses to let genre boundaries limit his expression.
